Washington Street between Chicago Avenue and Custer St

What is the story of this mural?

On June 10, 2019, the Evanston City Council voted unanimously to adopt a resolution affirming the City’s commitment to end structural racism and achieve racial equity. Read that resolution HERE. Artist Ben Blount used this resolution to inspire the mural.

"The Washington Street mural is inspired by the City of Evanston’s unanimous adoption of 58-R-19 A Resolution Commitment To End Structural Racism And Achieve Racial Equity in 2019.

The proposed mural pulls language directly from the resolution as a reminder to all residents of Evanston’s commitment.

The chosen verbs are meant to inspire Evanston residents as they highlight the active nature of that commitment."

We honor that resolution on this wall, and hope that this mural serves as a reminder of the work we must always be doing to make our community truly welcoming.

OUR HEARTFELT THANKS to the Art Encounter's Evanston Mural Arts Program and the Evanston Arts Council for their support of this mural.
